Episode 09: How to Build Momentum

Category : All Posts , The Podcast

Summary:

Getting a rock rolling takes a lot of work. But once it starts moving, it’s much easier to keep it going. It’s like that in rodeo, or in life. You set a goal and you begin reaching for it. But more often than not, we have to begin from zero. And beginning the process of moving toward a goal is immensely challenging in the beginning.

In today’s podcast, Kelly Timberman addresses the importance of momentum to a rodeo athlete or anyone who wishes to keep moving toward a goal. In the Champions Go 9-oh! coaching program the subject of momentum plays an important part of the winning strategy for any rodeo athlete.

Now that the 2016 rodeo regular season is about over and the participants in the WNFR are nearly decided, focus shifts to the big event in December. The problem is, there’s a lot of time between September and December and keeping your momentum strong is vital to success during the 10-day championships.

Go 9-oh! for the Road

In our Go 9-oh! for the Road Kelly and Bryan discuss a three-step process for creating momentum. Step one is making the commitment to take the necessary action toward you goal. Commitment can be the hardest part, especially since consistency can be the first casualty. That’s where step two comes in.

Step two is to take “baby steps.” Don’t try to take huge strides right from the starting line. Break you action steps down into smaller steps at first. Work on the little things and work you way up to larger steps as you begin to move forward.

Step three is to not focus on results too early. Many of us are results oriented. If we don’t see immediate pay-offs at the beginning, we get discouraged. Instead, just decide in your mind that you are not going to see results right away. In fact, it may take quite some time. But that does not mean you must be discouraged. Just keep moving forward, and the results will take care of themselves.
